Republican candidate Donald Trump announced that he and his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, have reached an agreement regarding their first televised debate scheduled for September 10, after threatening to withdraw from it two days earlier.
Harris’s team, however, has not confirmed the agreement with the former president, who is her opponent in the November presidential elections.
The anticipated debate had sparked disagreements over whether to mute the opponent’s microphone when the other is speaking.
Trump wrote on his “Truth Social” platform on Monday, questioning, “Why participate in a debate with Kamala Harris on this network?” referring to ABC, which he accused of bias towards the Democratic candidate.
Despite his repeated criticism of the American network, Trump confirmed that ABC provided guarantees that the debate in Philadelphia would be “fair.”
The Harris campaign, which insists on keeping the microphones open throughout the debate, accused Trump of evasion, without explicitly confirming if an agreement was reached.
Harris stated in a release that “the candidates have publicly shown their willingness to engage in an open-mic debate to allow for a substantive exchange between candidates, but it seems that Donald Trump allows those managing him to contradict him.” She added, “It’s sad!”
