First Case of Monkeypox Confirmed in Nairobi

Kenya’s Ministry of Health announced today, Friday, the confirmation of the first monkeypox case in the capital city, Nairobi, stating that the patient’s condition is stable.

The ministry’s statement revealed that “the case was identified in a 30-year-old woman who had traveled to Uganda a week prior,” noting that the patient is receiving treatment in an isolation unit in Nairobi.

This case marks the third confirmed monkeypox infection by Kenyan authorities, following two previous cases in Taita-Taveta County (southwest) and Busia County (east), both of which were successfully treated.

The ministry recorded that only three confirmed cases have been detected so far out of 89 suspected samples that have been or are being tested in the laboratory (79 negative results, and 7 are still under examination).

According to the World Health Organization, there have been 5,281 confirmed monkeypox cases in Africa this year as of August 25, 2024.
