Polisario and the Far-Left: Desperate Attempts to Revive Secessionist Rhetoric in the European Parliament
The End of the “Western Sahara Group” and Far-Left Maneuvers
On November 12, 2024, the European Parliament saw the dissolution of the “Western Sahara Group,” which had served as a propaganda platform for Algeria and the Polisario Front for two decades. This decision dealt a severe blow to Algeria’s efforts to promote its plans against Morocco’s territorial integrity. In response, Polisario members turned to the support of the far-left group “The Left,” which invited them to a closed-door meeting in Brussels.

The announcement of the meeting, scheduled for January 28, 2025, sparked widespread controversy. The agenda reportedly includes trade issues such as fisheries and agricultural agreements between Morocco and the European Union, including products from Morocco’s southern provinces. Thierry Mariani, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from the “National Rally” party, criticized the invitation as “disrespectful to Morocco’s sovereignty and the diplomacy of EU member states,” expressing his rejection of the move on social media.
Symbolism Without Impact
Mariani views the meeting as more symbolic than substantive, describing it as a last-ditch effort by the Polisario to remain relevant in European discourse after losing an effective platform within the European Parliament. He further noted that the closed-door meeting would likely have little practical impact.
