Morocco Leads African Tourism: Record Revenues and Future Ambitions

A Landmark Year for Moroccan Tourism

Morocco experienced an exceptional year in tourism in 2024, welcoming 17.4 million tourists—a 20% increase compared to 2023 and 35% compared to 2019. These figures cement Morocco’s position as the leading tourism destination in Africa. Tourism revenues reached a record 110 billion dirhams, surpassing the previous year’s 105 billion dirhams.

Record Performance and Job Creation

During a meeting of the Production Sectors Committee in Parliament, Fatim-Zahra Ammor, Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social and Solidarity Economy, highlighted that the tourism sector now employs 827,000 people, with 25,000 new jobs created in just one year.

Support and Development Strategies

This remarkable performance is attributed to a series of measures implemented under royal directives. Key initiatives include:

  • A 2 billion dirham emergency plan to support the sector.
  • A new tourism roadmap with a budget of 6.1 billion dirhams.

In preparation for hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2030 FIFA World Cup, Morocco launched the “Cap Hospitality” program to modernize tourism infrastructure. The program includes the renovation of 25,000 hotel rooms, with an investment of 2 billion dirhams.

Developing Sector Skills

Professional and higher education in tourism and hospitality has been strengthened with the introduction of 14 new training programs in collaboration with the Office of Vocational Training and Employment Promotion (OFPPT). Additionally, the “Kafaat” program was implemented to enhance sectoral capabilities.

Domestic Tourism as a Pillar

Minister Ammor emphasized the importance of domestic tourism, which accounted for 8.5 million overnight stays in classified hotels in 2024—30% of total overnight stays.
