Features of the Upcoming Government Reshuffle in Morocco: Key Departing Ministers

Media sources have revealed features of the anticipated government reshuffle, suggesting that the final stages of this reshuffle are approaching. The newspaper “Al-Sabah” reported that the parties of the ruling coalition have completed the proposal procedures related to positions that will undergo changes.

Leaks indicate that five State Secretaries will be added as part of this reshuffle, based on the royal court’s statement that announced the formation of the current government under Aziz Akhannouch. The statement mentioned the need to establish State Secretaries in some ministerial sectors later on.

On the other hand, the logic of the upcoming changes revolves around the challenges Morocco will face in the coming years. It is noticeable that it is unacceptable not to have a dedicated Ministry of Sports in a country preparing to host major sporting events, such as the African Cup of Nations 2025 and the World Cup 2030. This calls for a review of the experience of linking the Ministry of Sports with National Education, which has been considered unsuccessful.

Sources also indicated that Abdelatif Ouahbi would remain the head of the Ministry of Justice, a decision deemed necessary to continue the legislative reform path the ministry is undertaking. Changing the minister in this context could negatively affect the ongoing work pace since the beginning of the current government term. Additionally, one prominent leader was excluded from entering the government due to opaque real estate dealings awaiting judicial resolution.

Regarding ministers set to depart in the upcoming reshuffle in the coming weeks, it is expected that the Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, will leave, as he has had a tense relationship with the government presidency. Nadia Fettah Alaoui, the Minister of Economy and Finance, will also leave, raising the question of whether she will return to her previous position in the administration of Moulay Hafid Elalamy’s group, or take over the Ministry of Industry and Trade instead of Ryad Mezzour.

As for Fatima Zahra Ammor, the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, Social and Solidarity Economy, she may face leaving the government due to criticism received for her excessive dealings with foreign companies. Alongside her, Khalid Ait Taleb, the Minister of Health and Social Protection, and Aawatif Hayar, the Minister of Solidarity, Social Integration, and Family, are also expected to depart.
