Guerguerat Border Crossing: International Trafficking Attempt of Hard Drugs Foiled
A joint operation conducted by elements of the National Security and Customs at the Guerguerat border crossing, south of the city of Dakhla, on Tuesday, resulted in thwarting an international drug trafficking operation, with the seizure of 37 kilograms and 635 grams of cocaine destined for Morocco from abroad.
A security source explained that border monitoring and thorough inspections led to the discovery of this strong drug shipment, consisting of 36 slabs, carefully hidden within the cabin of a Moroccan-registered international freight truck transporting a shipment of dried fruits. The interception occurred immediately after the truck arrived at the Guerguerat border crossing from a Sub-Saharan African country, and the arrest of its 30-year-old Moroccan driver was made.
He added that the specialized security services have opened an investigation under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor’s office to determine all local and international connections related to this criminal activity and to arrest all those involved.
The same source noted that this security operation falls within the intensive efforts exerted by the General Directorate of National Security to combat international drug trafficking, specifically the illicit trafficking of potent drugs and psychotropic substances smuggled from outside Morocco.
