Meta Updates Classification of AI-Edited Content on Its Platforms

Meta has announced a new update to the way content edited or processed using generative AI is classified on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. Instead of displaying the “AI Info” label directly under the username, it will now appear within a menu in the top right corner of edited images and videos. Users can click on the menu to view details about the edits made using AI.

These changes come after criticism from creators and photographers concerning the previous “Made with AI” label, which was mistakenly applied to real images. Meta asserts that the updates aim to provide accurate information on the extent of AI usage in content modification, whether it is a simple edit using tools like Photoshop or fully generated by AI.

Meta points out that these changes will begin appearing on the platforms starting next week, based on “industry-shared signals” to identify content that has been edited or created by AI. Among these systems are Adobe’s C2PA content metadata system and Google’s SynthID watermarks used to verify content.

However, completely removing labels from manipulated real images may pose challenges in avoiding misinformation, especially with the increasing use of advanced AI editing tools. This move by Meta is part of its efforts to enhance transparency and reduce informational chaos on its platforms.
