Morocco Strengthens Its International Standing with the Re-Election of Omar Battas to a UN Committee

Morocco has been deservedly re-elected, represented by Omar Battas, to the United Nations Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture for the 2025-2028 term. The election took place during the 10th meeting of the States Parties held today, Thursday, in Geneva, according to a statement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccan Expatriates.
This re-election reflects the international community’s confidence in the work carried out by Morocco, thanks to the foresighted vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI for the protection and promotion of human rights in their universality and indivisibility.
It also highlights the credibility of Morocco’s efforts to address global challenges that hinder the full enjoyment of economic, social, and cultural rights by populations.
Omar Battas, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Casablanca and head of the Psychiatry Department, has authored several publications on the prevention of torture, the most recent being titled “Managing the Health Emergency in Morocco: Security and Human Rights.”
The Subcommittee on the Prevention of Torture is a treaty body within the United Nations system that focuses on human rights protection. Its preventive mission takes a proactive approach to preventing torture and ill-treatment.
The subcommittee visits places of deprivation of liberty and assesses the treatment of detainees. It also provides advice to national prevention mechanisms as part of its mandate.
