Report: Iran Plans “Surprising” Retaliation Against Israel on Three Fronts
The American newspaper “The Wall Street Journal” revealed on Wednesday the details of Iran’s plans to retaliate against Israel following the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
The newspaper noted in its report that Iran has prepared three main fronts for its response to this assassination, based on a statement obtained from the Iranian mission to the United Nations. The statement accuses Israel of being involved in the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, despite no official Israeli comment regarding the incident.
The Iranian response fronts include:
- Punishing Israel.
- Deterring Israel from carrying out similar attacks in the future.
- Avoiding any backlash that could affect the anticipated ceasefire in Gaza.
The Iranian statement made it clear that the timing and nature of the response would be precisely determined to ensure “maximum surprise,” suggesting that the response could come in unexpected ways, whether through land or by utilizing various tactics.
According to the report, Iran has decided to delay its retaliation for now due to ongoing negotiations for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
The newspaper quoted a senior American official saying that the potential ceasefire in Gaza is not the only reason for Iran’s hesitation to carry out its attack, as Tehran fears that a direct assault on Israel could lead to a wider regional war—a scenario that may carry high costs for Iran, particularly given its struggling economy and the possibility of direct U.S. intervention in the conflict.
