Syrian Opposition Seizes Damascus as Bashar al-Assad Steps Down

The Russian Foreign Ministry announced today that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has decided to step down and direct the transfer of power in a peaceful manner following negotiations with various armed conflict factions in Syria. The ministry clarified that it was not involved in these negotiations but is monitoring the situation with great concern.

In a surprising development, Syrian opposition factions declared full control over the capital, Damascus, through a statement broadcasted on official television channels, stating the “liberation of the city and the overthrow of the Assad regime” after their forces entered the capital following fierce battles. Some reports indicate that Assad has left Syria for an undisclosed destination.

Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry called on all parties to refrain from violence and adhere to political solutions in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254. The ministry confirmed its ongoing communication with Syrian opposition factions and expressed support for efforts to establish a comprehensive political process that includes all ethnic and religious groups in Syrian society.

The ministry also noted that Russian military bases in Syria are on high alert, emphasizing that there are currently no security threats. It assured that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the safety of Russian citizens residing in Syria.

In concluding the statement, Moscow expressed hope to support the United Nations and all concerned international parties in achieving a political solution that ensures stability and peace in Syria, ending the long-standing suffering of the Syrian people.
