The Tata region, located in southeastern Morocco, has experienced devastating floods that have resulted in the deaths of eight people and left 15 others missing, according to local media reports published on Sunday. In a statement to the correspondent of “Al Khabriya” newspaper, the head of the Tamannart municipality in Tata explained that the initial toll indicates the recovery of eight bodies, while search operations for the missing continue.
The disaster began on Saturday evening when heavy rains caused flash floods in the area. These rains led to the collapse of several homes and the disappearance of several people, plunging residents into a state of panic and uncertainty about the situation’s outcome. Testimonies from local youths described the atmosphere as eerie and concerning, noting that there were no signs of relief in sight.
For his part, Mustafa Marra, the regional director of equipment in Tata, stated to the press that the floods had cut off many roads, affirming that efforts were ongoing to reopen damaged roads and repair the damage. He also reported that the assessment of losses would commence once water levels receded.
The Moroccan Directorate General of Meteorology had issued an “orange” vigilance warning, indicating the expectation of potentially severe thunderstorms in multiple locations, including Tata. The meteorological agency predicts rainfall amounts between 20 to 35 mm in regions such as Tinghir, Zagora, Al Haouz, Azilal, Errachidia, Midelt, Tata, and Ouarzazate. It is noted that these weather conditions could persist from 3 PM to 10 PM local time on Sunday.
Local authorities are making concerted efforts to provide support and relief to those affected, with ongoing warnings to residents to take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety amidst this violent natural phenomenon that has caused substantial human and material losses.
