The Algerian Regime Maneuvers to Occupy the “Majhar Al-Shakkat” Area to Plunder the Wealth of the Mauritanian People

Last weekend, the Algerian-Mauritanian border witnessed a notable incident involving the incursion of an Algerian military unit into Mauritanian territory, specifically in the “Majhar Al-Shakkat” area in northern Mauritania, under the pretext of suspecting the presence of “terrorists.”

Observers consider the Algerian army’s incursion into Mauritania as a violation of national sovereignty and a disregard for the Mauritanian military and security forces stationed along its borders. This action underscores the military regime’s latent intent to seize control of the resource-rich region, particularly its gold reserves.

This expansionist incursion coincided with Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazwani’s visit to Morocco last week, raising questions about the timing and implications of this move. Some perceive it as a direct threat to Mauritanian sovereignty.

An Algerian Border Guard patrol reached the “Majhar Al-Shakkat” area, known for its gold mining activities. The region is located within Mauritanian territory, approximately 8 kilometers from the shared border, making the incident a focal point for local and regional public opinion.
