Wide Controversy After Fighter Jet Squadron Escorts Tebboune’s Plane on His Trip to Mauritania

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune arrived last Monday in neighboring Mauritania to participate in the continental conference on education, youth, and employability, held in Nouakchott from December 9 to 11.

According to multiple media reports, Tebboune’s visit to Nouakchott, the first of its kind in 37 years, has sparked wide controversy following the appearance of a squadron of fighter jets from the national army escorting the presidential plane throughout its journey until it exited Algerian airspace en route to Mauritania.

In this context, several analysts suggest that the presence of Algerian fighter jets during most of Tebboune’s international travels reflects his constant concern and fear of an assassination attempt, particularly amidst escalating conflicts between factions within the military regime, some of which have openly opposed Tebboune’s return to the Mouradia Palace.
