Cohost, the Competitor to X, Declares Bankruptcy

The microblogging platform Cohost, launched in June 2022 to compete with “X,” has announced its intention to shut down the platform following its bankruptcy.

TechCrunch, a specialized technology website, noted that the platform, which operated similarly to X, allowed users to follow others, view posts, interact with them, and repost content with other users.

However, Cohost distinguished itself by focusing on a chronological display of posts rather than by trending topics on the platform, supporting longer posts without a character limit, and adopting a business model that does not rely on advertisements.

The paid subscription “Cohost Plus” offered advanced features such as increased file upload sizes and plans to add support for content creator tools like subscription sales and more.

Fighting Capitalism

It is worth noting that the non-profit software company “Anti Software Software Club” founded Cohost in collaboration with a small group of developers to counter the dominance of large corporations and capitalism. The founders of the company, Colin Byer and Jai Kaplan, stated in 2020, “We see the world being swayed by the lies of those who believe in the disruptive potentials of technology, who think that the best way to harness these potentials is to create giant profit-driven entities.”

Despite Cohost’s ambition to challenge the dominance of major tech companies, it faced increasing competition from X, as well as from Meta, which launched a similar platform to X called Threads.
