Democratic Republic of Congo Sees Worrying Rise in Monkeypox Cases

The African Union Center for Disease Control and Prevention confirmed today, Thursday, that more than a thousand cases of the monkeypox virus have been recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo over the course of one week, from August 13 to 20.

According to data from the Congolese Ministry of Health, more than 17,000 confirmed or suspected cases of monkeypox have been discovered in the country since the beginning of the year, with over 570 resulting in death.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo had declared a nationwide outbreak of monkeypox in December 2022.

It is noted that monkeypox is often transmitted through sexual contact, skin contact, and sharing personal items. The symptoms of this virus include a skin rash, malaise, fever, swollen lymph nodes, chills, headache, and muscle pain.
