In July, Morocco strengthened its position as the second-largest supplier of fertilizers to the European Union, directly behind Russia, according to data from the Russian news agency RIA Novosti. The report confirmed that the Kingdom tripled its exports of fertilizers to 111 million euros, emphasizing Morocco’s growing importance in the fertilizer sector, a field where the country excels thanks to its vast phosphate reserves.
The total EU imports of fertilizers during the same period doubled, reaching 643 million euros, with Russia remaining the EU’s main supplier, accounting for 31% of total imports, the highest share since March 2022. Morocco distinguished itself with the ability to quickly increase its exports, demonstrating its competitiveness in the international market.
In addition to Morocco, Egypt also managed to increase its exports, reaching a value of 85 million euros, a growth of 1.4 percentage points, followed by Algeria and Canada, with export values of 37 million and 27 million euros, respectively. These figures illustrate the regional dynamics where North African countries play a significant role in supplying fertilizers to Europe.
Morocco holds the world’s largest phosphate reserves, granting it an undeniable strategic advantage. The Office Chérifien des Phosphates (OCP), through significant investments in modernizing its infrastructure and an international expansion strategy, has successfully increased its production and diversified its markets.
Phosphate is essential for producing fertilizers, which are crucial for global agriculture. By increasing its exports, Morocco contributes not only to its economic growth but also to global food security. Moroccan phosphate fertilizers are used in many countries to improve agricultural yields, which is particularly important in the context of population growth and climate change.

One such plant is the new fertilizer production facility in Ethiopia, in partnership with the Ethiopian government, aimed at meeting the rising demand for fertilizers in East Africa and bolstering Morocco’s position as a key supplier in the region.
Additionally, OCP is doubling its investments in research and development to improve the efficiency of its products and reduce their environmental impact. The company is working on innovative technologies to produce eco-friendly fertilizers using renewable energy sources and minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.
