Morocco and Mauritania Sign Memorandum of Understanding to Strengthen Partnership in Electricity and Renewable Energies

Morocco and Mauritania have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop their partnership in the electricity and renewable energy sectors, reflecting the shared ambitions of His Majesty King Mohammed VI and the President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

Shared Potential and Vision

In his statement, the Moroccan Minister of Energy, Leila Benali, highlighted the significant opportunities available to both nations, emphasizing their potential to lead in the fields of renewable energy and electricity. Mauritanian Minister of Petroleum and Energy, Abdessalam Ould Mohamed Saleh, echoed this sentiment, stating, “The future is promising, opportunities are abundant, and the vision is clear. All agreed-upon initiatives will be realized.”

Strategic Projects

Discussions also covered major strategic projects such as the Morocco-Nigeria gas pipeline and emerging energy initiatives, including green hydrogen. Both parties underscored the importance of their shared vision, which focuses on sustainable development and aims to position Africa as a continent with vast potential for growth and prosperity.

A Framework for Cooperation

This visit by the Mauritanian Minister of Petroleum and Energy to Morocco highlights the ongoing consultation and coordination between the two countries. It aims to strengthen and expand bilateral relations in alignment with the high directives of King Mohammed VI and President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani.

On the Moroccan side, the meeting was attended by the Director General of the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water, the CEO of the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), the Secretary General for Energy Transition, and the Secretary General for Sustainable Development. The Mauritanian delegation included key officials, notably the Director General of Electricity and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Mokhtar Ahmed Mouloud.

This partnership exemplifies the strong and forward-looking relationship between Morocco and Mauritania, driven by a commitment to sustainability and regional integration.
