Morocco Becomes First African Country to Equip F-16 Jets with Advanced American Missiles
In a significant move to bolster its military and defense capabilities, the Kingdom of Morocco has become the first African nation to acquire AGM-154C JSOW precision munitions to equip its F-16 fighters, according to an announcement by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) of the U.S. Department of Defense.
This deal represents a strategic development that enhances Morocco’s role as a key ally outside NATO and underscores its position in maintaining political stability and economic progress in the North African region.
Regarding the details of the deal, Morocco will receive 40 missiles of the mentioned model valued at $250 million. These advanced munitions will be integrated into the Royal Moroccan Air Force’s F-16 fighters and include various necessary components such as training missiles, guided and unguided flight vehicles, munitions storage containers, integration and testing support related to the missiles, as well as the development of operational flight software for the weapons. Additionally, training and necessary engineering and logistics support will be provided to ensure optimal use of these advanced weapons.
The AGM-154C JSOW missiles have exceptional capabilities, making them among the most important in their class. They can reach medium-range targets at distances of up to 22 km when launched from low altitude, and over 120 km when launched from high altitude. They are designed to maintain a safe distance from hostile air defense systems, enhancing the Moroccan Air Force’s ability to conduct operations efficiently and safely.
Strategically, this deal aims to enhance Morocco’s defense capabilities to face current and future threats, both on the ground and in the air, especially concerning the protection of vital maritime corridors that play a crucial role in the regional and international economy. This defensive collaboration also reflects the development of bilateral relations between Morocco and the United States, forming part of the U.S. policy to support key allies outside NATO, particularly in sensitive regions like North Africa.
In parallel, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency has confirmed that Morocco will not face any difficulty in integrating these weapons into its armed forces, implying that the process will proceed smoothly without technical challenges.
For its part, the United States seeks through this deal to support its national security and foreign policy strategy, as this step strengthens the security of a strategic ally in the North African region, an area of increasing geopolitical importance amid the security challenges it faces.
