Morocco: Humanitarian and Security Efforts Foil 78,685 Irregular Migration Attempts in 2024

In 2024, Morocco continued to face increasing pressure from irregular migration within an unstable regional context marked by security challenges. Data from the Ministry of Interior revealed that Moroccan authorities successfully thwarted 78,685 attempts at irregular migration, leveraging advanced border and coastal surveillance systems.

Profiles of Migrants and Human Smuggling Networks

According to the data, 58% of irregular migrants were from West African countries, 12% from North Africa, and 9% from East and Central Africa. Moroccan authorities dismantled 332 human trafficking networks during the year, noting that these networks are continually evolving their methods and coordinating activities to enhance their operations.

Border Security and Humanitarian Response

The year also recorded 14 attempts to breach the borders of the occupied cities of Ceuta and Melilla, involving over 4,290 migrants. At sea, Moroccan authorities rescued 18,645 migrants, who were provided with medical assistance, shelter, and guidance. This reflects Morocco’s commitment to managing borders with a human-rights-centered approach that upholds human dignity.

Voluntary Return and Regional Development

In collaboration with diplomatic missions, 6,135 irregular migrants were voluntarily repatriated to their home countries as part of Morocco’s national strategy on migration and asylum, which prioritizes humanitarian and protective measures.
