The Spanish media outlet El Economista reported today, Monday, that Morocco has moved into high gear to exploit its strong potential in offshore wind energy and to increase its wind power generation capacity.
The media outlet explained that to achieve this goal, the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy is committed to enhancing the development of the offshore wind industry, leveraging the expertise it has acquired in this field to develop the first offshore wind farm off the coast of Essaouira.
El Economista added in an article titled “Morocco Signs Agreement with the European Investment Bank to Accelerate Its Offshore Wind Energy Projects and Join Portugal and France,” that this project, supported by a grant of 2 million euros from the European Investment Bank, represents a significant step forward for the kingdom in this domain.
The source, citing estimates from the World Bank Group published on the “Offshore Wind” platform, noted that Morocco possesses 200 gigawatts of potential offshore wind energy, 22 gigawatts of which are most suitable for fixed wind turbines.
According to the Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy, Morocco has great potential for exploiting offshore wind energy, especially along its Atlantic coast.
Studies have indicated that this area benefits from high wind speeds and favorable marine conditions for fixed offshore wind turbines, due to its shallow waters.
