Stellantis Shifts Citroën C4 Production to Morocco : A Strategic Move in Automotive Industry

Stellantis has announced plans to relocate the production of the fourth-generation Citroën C4 to its Kénitra plant in Morocco starting in 2028. This move aligns with the group’s strategy to reduce production costs and enhance efficiency, supported by a €300 million investment since 2022 to develop the facility as a key production hub. The new production will leverage the “Smart” multi-energy platform, positioning Citroën as a competitive and affordable choice in the market.

This decision poses challenges for the “Villaverde” plant in Madrid, which heavily relies on C4 production to sustain its operations. Reports suggest the plant may face operational difficulties after the third-generation C4 and electric C4 production ends in 2029, with limited alternative projects in sight.

Meanwhile, Morocco strengthens its role as a regional industrial hub for the automotive sector, as the Kénitra plant has proven its efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Additionally, Stellantis confirmed that the Lancia Delta model would be produced in Pomigliano d’Arco, Italy, dismissing hopes of assigning this project to the Madrid plant, which had aimed to secure its future operations.
