Spain has increased its gas exports to Morocco in recent months, according to a recent report circulated by Spanish newspapers.
Spanish media sources revealed that “gas exports from Spain to Morocco have surged from 7.7% to over 18% of the total in one year through the Maghreb gas pipeline.”
Natural gas exports from Spain to Morocco accounted for only 0.1% of the total gas exports provided by Spain in June 2022. After a year, this figure rose to 7.7% in 2023.
The same source noted that this percentage reached a total of 18.5% in June 2024. Other reports indicated that this rise in Spain’s exports to Morocco coincided with an increase in Spain’s imports of Algerian gas.
While increasing its shipments to Morocco, the source indicates that “Spain reduced its exports to ‘neighbors’ such as Italy.” In 2023, shipments via the “gas pipeline” between Barcelona and Livorno accounted for a total of 18.4% of gas from Spain to ports crossing the Alps, while this figure dropped to 4.4% according to figures and statistics published in June 2024.
